France awards contract for optical link between UAV and satellite

France’s DGA (defence procurement agency) launched the LOLA (airborne laser optical link) technology demonstrator programme by awarding EADS Astrium SAS a 48 million-euro contract. The company will demonstrate an optical link between an airborne carrier representative of the future medium- and high-altitude UAVs (MALE and HALE) and the ARTEMIS geo-stationary satellite from ESA by 2006.
