UAVS, the UK's Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems Association (UAVS), will hold (in partnership with the Society of British Aerospace Companies), a Special UAV Forum during this year's Farnborough Airshow International.

The UAV Forum, on Friday 23 July 2004, will be held in the Media Centre during the Airshow. Market barriers to UAV operation have been defined, by UAVS, as falling into several categories - regulatory, political, economic, social, environmental and technological. This forum attempts to address these barriers to market and, through discussion and debate, to map the way forward for UAV system technologies.

High-level UK government and Ministry of Defence speakers have been invited to air their views on UAV programmes, procurement and future opportunities. The military capability of unmanned systems will be reviewed and future challenges will be addressed.

A UAV global market analysis will be presented by Frost and Sullivan, with an overview of the market and new potential. Civil and commercial roles will be explored by current UAV operators and the regulatory landscape, enabling future operation of unmanned systems in these roles, will be defined.

The media sponsors of the event are www.uavworld.com, the online UAV news service, and Unmanned Vehicles magazine.

To reflect the growing maturity of the unmanned systems industry in the UK, UAVS has re-structured its activities to best serve its members.

“We have created two new groups, the Industrial Development Group and the Best Practice Group, to maintain a clear focus on the issues which our members believe are important,” explained Perry Jago, UAVS Secretary. “The Association started in a nascent industry with a goal to influence political and regulatory requirements to ensure that the needs of UAV industry in the UK were met. We have done this with great success and are evolving now, as the industry develops, to meet tomorrow’s challenges in the same way.”
