EADS makes strategic appointments

EADS CEO Rainer Hertrich will lead the EADS Aeronautics Division in the future. The EADS Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of Dietrich Russell (62), who has decided to retire for personal reasons. In addition to his current position as EADS CEO, Rainer Hertrich (54) will take up the responsibility with effect from 1 April 2004.

The Aeronautics Division groups together a portfolio of civil and military aviation-related businesses including helicopters (Eurocopter), regional aircraft (ATR), general aviation aircraft (Socata) as well as aircraft maintenance and conversion, repair and overhaul and aerostructures (Sogerma/EADS EFW).

The Board of EADS has appointed Johann Heitzmann (50) as the new head of the EADS Military Aircraft Business Unit. Heitzmann succeeds Aloysius Rauen (47), who transfers to the position of Chief Executive Officer of Eurofighter GmbH, located at Hallbergmoos near Munich. Heitzmann, who is to take up his new task in Ottobrunn on 1 May, currently heads the EADS Defence Electronics Business Unit located in Ulm.

His successor will be Bernhard Gerwert (50), who at the moment is in charge of the Air and Naval Defence arm in Ulm. EADS presented mock-ups of the Orka maritime vertical take-off and landing UAV, based on a helicopter airframe, and the medium altitude long endurance Eagle UAV during the recent Asian Aerospace exhibition. An Eagle prototype has been selected by the UK Ministry of Defence for the Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) aspect of the Joint UAV Experimental Programme JUEP.
