D-STAR Engineering Corporation (Shelton, CT) has developed a 0.1 hp micro diesel engine that runs on JP-8or diesel fuel plus 0.3% 2-stroke oil, with no volatile additives. Funded by DARPA for cruising micro air vehicles (MAVs), the engine weighs around 2 ounces. For hover-capable VTOL MAVs, DARPA has also funded the development of a 1.3hp mini-diesel engine that runs on JP-8 (or diesel fuel) plus 3% 2-stroke oil with no volatile additives. This engine, developed by D-STAR, weighs around 22 ounces. D-STAR is also developing a hybrid-electric power system based on this engine, for use by MAVs that can land, shut down the engine and engage in long-duration surveillance with low power needs and then re-start to fly to new locations. Such MAVs are expected to become standard equipment for platoons of soldiers and may also enable them to charge batteries for their electronic equipment.
